I made it to Ashland in fine time. I'll tell you what though, the intersection of young kids going clubbing and a relatively old coot with an early morning alarm set, all staying in the same hostel room, isn't pretty. Just remember what P.J. O'Rourke said, Age and Guile beat Youth, Innocence and a Bad Haircut. In any case, I got here a couple hours earlier than I needed to (bad planning, boooo!), so I hit the Starbucks and logged in for a bit.
At 12:30 I met my interviewee (I don't want to ruin the surprise :p) at Dragonfly, which first of all is absoutely scrumptuous. Our conversation was wide-ranging and enjoyable; now I've just got to get it turned into a coherent feature. They also lit the flames of a couple other feature possibilities, but I need to work my meager contacts before I can generate real heat.
By then it was mid-afternoon, so I hoofed it to the Ashland Hostel and checked in. I'll save a full review for later; suffice it to say that it's a lot more casual than the Portland place. After that, I hoofed BACK to the restaurant where, one door up, I found the Oregon Cabaret. I purchased a ticket for tomorrow evening's show (more on that tomorrow) and shook a couple hands / exchanged business cards.
Now I'm back at the hostel, eating on the cheap and relaxing until this evening's performance of Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. I was going to take photos of businesses, but the traffic is just too heavy to get anything good. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I think I'll be getting up early tomorrow to snap some shots. Woof.
