News from Ashland for January 17, 2009

Dust is still being kicked up around some parts of the internet as a result of Ashland being the focus of a study into parents who forego certain immunizations for their children. A favorite nut-hatch of mine (which I won't link to because they don't deserve the press) said the government was wasting money learning "obvious" answers to these questions. I'm not taking a stand on the issue, but saying the reasons are obvious begs the question - does that make 99% of parents stupid? Let's keep on studying, and thanks to Ashland for providing a fascinating test bed.

News from Ashland for December 4, 2008

As described at OregonLive.com, Oregon Shakespeare Festival's outreach programs are in full swing with artists bringing the Bard into the classroom in Oregon high schools. Rafael Untalan and Christopher DuVal are spending the week at Lake Oswego High School before moving on to Cleveland High School next week. Six two-person teams are touring the West Coast this fall, spreading the gospel of theater.

News from Ashland for October 9th, 2008

Bill Rauch has a guest opinion column in yesterday's Oregonian. It's a fine piece about the nature of the arts as it relates to the community. I'm pretty sure that, a year from now, a search of this site for "Bill Rauch + community" will run to several pages. Stay tuned.

The Mail Tribune had a really nice piece about volunteerism in Ashland, where there are so many organizations (not just the 800lb gorilla in tights) that rely on the efforts of passionate people

Here's a completely positive review of The Clay Cart. They do exist.

News from Ashland for August 29th, 2008

(This is actually catching up on the last couple weeks, more to come soon)

Interestingly, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival is casting non-union African American males and females for the 2009 season. I don't know (yet) if this is for a specific play or if it's part of the larger diversification of the Company.

I'm a little behind the times here, but Art Bullock is running for mayor. Bullock has a penchant for suing City Hall; he may be a nuisance, but at least he's decided upon a more constructive way to institute change. Yes he can

The first scoop I've seen anywhere about plays in OSF's American Revolutions cycle - Jonathan Moscone and Tony Taconne are collaborating on a play about Moscone's relationship with his father, George Moscone. The elder Moscone was mayor of San Francisco when he was assassinated at the same time as Harvey Milk

Ashland's high rate of vaccination opt-outs is garnering national attention.. .

News from Ashland for August 19th, 2008

Locals and travelers approaching Ashland from the North have found the I-5 construction inescapable. When is the work going to get around to improving the Ashland interchanges? Not for awhile, it seems.

Ozdachs, at Dangerous Common Sense, has a slew of OSF-related reviews up. He's certainly not shy, give him a read!
